A tractor trailer hauling an oversize load got stuck in the Battery Street tunnel in Seattle last week, backing up traffic for four miles.
It happened on Friday, just before 5 p.m., on State Route 99.
According to KOMO news, the semi truck was driving north on State Route 99 when it entered the Battery Street tunnel.
The truck entered the tunnel in the left lane where it struck the concrete ceiling, scraping the top of the load, and wedging the truck underneath the bridge.
“The driver of the truck failed to obtain a city permit, which would have included a map with alternate routes keeping him clear of the tunnel,” said the Seattle Department of Transportation in a release.
In order to move the truck, its tires were deflated, and a large tow truck was required to remove the big rig from the tunnel.
State Route 99 was reopened and the truck removed by 6:30 p.m.
“The driver did receive a fine and citation,” said a Seattle Dept. of Transportation official.
