The dates for CVSA’s annual “Operation Safe Driver Week” have just been announced. This year, the event will take place during the week of October 16-22, 2016 and in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
Operation Safe Driver Week is designed to help reduce unsafe driving practices in both commercial vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers by combining education and increased law enforcement. According to the CVSA, risky driving behavior is the leading cause of cashes. The FMSCA reported that more than 88% of large truck crashes and 93% of car crashes is caused by such behavior.
During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, 21,012 CMV drivers were pulled over, and 19,480 roadside inspections were performed.
The top five warnings and citations were issued to CMV drivers due to:
1. size and weight
2. speeding
3. failure to use a seatbelt while operating a CMV
4. failure to obey traffic control device
5. using a handheld phone
The CVSA says there will be an increase of both CMV and car driver traffic enforcement during this years event. The organization’s stated goal is to reduce the number of crashes, deaths, and injuries caused by high-risk driving habits.
