The body of a truck driver who crashed into an Iowa river on Friday afternoon has been found.

The crash happened on Friday, July 21st at approximately 11:48 a.m. on US Highway 20 outside of Independence, Iowa.

According to KWWL news, 58-year-old Michael Wallace was driving his tractor trailer westbound on US 20 when he lost control of the rig, crashed through a guard rail, drove along a grassy median, and then plunged into the Wapsipinicon River.

The accident was discovered when road crews noticed a guardrail had been severely damaged near the river and upon investigating the scene, saw a submerged semi truck.

The mangled truck was removed from the river using multiple cranes, but authorities found no sign of the driver.

Independence Fire and Rescue sent in divers and search the river bottom throughout the weekend in search of the truck driver.

Wallace’s body was found downriver, probably due to “fast moving floodwaters” on Sunday afternoon on July 23rd.

The exact cause of the crash is still unknown.
