A truck driver is miraculously unhurt after a crash with a school bus left the truck’s cab completely destroyed.

The accident happened on Thursday, October 5th in Nelson County, Virginia.

According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, a bus driver was speeding up on US 29 south after dropping off a student when a tractor trailer came up from behind at an “accelerated speed.”
The bus driver was “pretty sure the [truck] driver wasn’t going to be able to stop,” so the bus driver attempted to move as far to the right as possible to give the truck plenty of space.

The truck then swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid striking the bus, reported the Nelson County Times.

Despite the swerve, the tractor trailer clipped the school bus near the back, driver’s side tail light, damaging the rear of the bus and severely damaging the truck. The brakes on the semi truck then locked up and the truck slid to a stop on the side of the road.

There was one student on the bus at the time of the accident. The force of the collision threw the student to the floor, but the child was uninjured.

The bus driver and the truck driver also walked away uninjured.

“Our driver did a phenomenal job to being alert to the fact it was going to happen and to avoid the potential consequences,” said Nelson County Public School Superintendent Jeff Comer.

“If you were here to see it, it could’ve been much more catastrophic, but I think there was a credit to both parties, our bus driver and the driver of the 18-wheeler, that they took every action they probably could at that point to avoid the contact … even though it did happen,” Comer continued.

The bus driver will not be charged, but it is unclear whether the truck driver will receive a citation.

The identity of the drivers involved have not yet been released.
