Earlier in the week, we reported about a fatal accident involving a bus and a semi. No charges have been filed against the driver who caused the tragic collision.
It happened Saturday morning in Wakulla County, Florida when a bus driver failed to stop at a flashing red light. The bus collided with a semi truck, spun around and then hit it a second time. The vehicles veered the off road, stopped under a power-line and caught fire.
Both vehicles were destroyed.
The bus was carrying 34 passengers. Four people, including the truck driver and a small child, were killed, and another 25 people were injured. The bus driver, 56-year-old Elie Dupiche, was hospitalized in critical condition.
According to CNN, original reports incorrectly stated that there were five deaths. That number has been reduced to four.
Wakulla County Sheriff Charlie Creel told reporters that officers got on top of the bus in order to rescue the passengers before flames enveloped the vehicle.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the inferno.
Sheriff Creel told reporters:
“We would have had more (deaths) if it hadn’t been for the efforts of our deputies.”
The crash remains under investigation. Officials believe that the bus driver may have been tired, however, as of Thursday morning he has not been charged.
