An armed man jumped into a semi truck that was stopped to make a delivery, threatening the trucker and stealing the truck before taking police on a slow-speed chase through town.
The incident happened in Weld County, Colorado at approximately 6:30 a.m. on January 24th.
According to KDVR, the truck driver was outside his Sysco food truck while making a delivery to a restaurant near 84th Avenue and Interstate 25 when he noticed someone inside the cab of his truck.
Police say the trucker then confronted the man, and the man produced some sort of weapon, so the trucker gave up the rig.
Police pursued the truck thief for several minutes before turning to the use of GPS to track the rig through Boulder, Longmont, and Weld County. Officers then deployed stop sticks, flattening six of the tractor trailer’s tires, but the truck thief kept going, this time obeying traffic laws by going the speed limit and following all signals and signs.
Officers then fell back and allowed three unmarked patrol cars to follow the rig until it eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Highway 66 and Weld County Road 9 1/2 just east of Interstate 25. The suspect was then taken into custody.
The identities of the truck driver and the truck thief have not been released, and the exact charges filed against the suspect are not yet known.
