The Arizona Department of Transportation has installed a new $7.5m camera system near several highway rest areas that are designed to inspect semi trucks on the fly.

ADOT spokesman, Harold Sanders, responded to motorists that were concerned about the new cameras popping up, and informed them that they’re only targeted towards big rigs. “This is not photo enforcement. We get so many calls on that from the general public because once upon a time photo enforcement did exist,” he said. “But it has absolutely no ability to capture that type of information.”

The cameras are equipped with sensors that will direct overweight semis to pull into rest areas for a secondary inspection according to ABC-15.

Sander’s said the system is in place because the increasing amount of commercial vehicles makes it “impossible to stop every truck to do an inspection. It is just a waste of time.”

The cameras have been installed on Interstate 10, near the Sacaton Rest Area; on interestate 17 near the McGuierveille Rest Area; and on Interstate 19 near the Canoa Ranch Rest Are. The system will be up and running in the next 30 days according to ADOT.
