On Tuesday, March 25, highway police responded to a call from the driver of a stranded 18-wheeler on Interstate 49 in Louisiana. The truck was transporting elephants from New Orleans to Texas for a circus performance.
As if a truck full of elephants wasn’t strange enough, what the police found the elephants doing was even stranger.
It turns out that the truck had stopped too close to the edge of the highway, and had begun to lean. The elephants, in a surprising display of quick thinking, coordinated a team effort to hold the truck up to stop it from rolling over.
According to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff Office, “When deputies arrived on scene, they were astounded to find two elephants keeping the eighteen wheeler from overturning:”
A local wrecker arrived at the scene soon after the police. The truck and the elephants were sent on their merry way, and the police issued no tickets or citations.
