The Utah Department of Transportation has figured out how to get drivers to pay more attention to major safety issues — by turning their highway signs into safety memes.
The signs have been shared thousands of times on social media this year. Utah DOT spokesman, John Gleason, recently spoke about the signs:
“We take a lighthearted approach, but make no mistake – this is a very serious issue. People are dying on our roads and we want to do something to get people’s attention, and to get people talking.”
Here are 10 of the most clever Utah highway signs seen by drivers this year:
“Steering wheel: Not a hands free device.”
“Get your head out of your apps”
“It’s Columbus Day, discover your turn signal.”
“Road debris hurts — please secure your load.”
“Control your fate. Texting can wait”
“Not buckled? What’s holding you back?”
“That seat belt looks good on you.”
“Tomorrow is the reward for safe driving today.”
“Texting + driving is clever said no one ever.”
“Drowsy? Crash on a couch not on a road.”
Not everyone loves the new safety signs, however. According to a poll on KSL.com roughly 8% of Utah motorists find the signs offensive. Still though, anything that gets more people to focus on road safety is a victory in our book.
