An Illinois-woman was killed on Sunday evening after the driver of the vehicle she was in tried to pass a semi truck on the highway’s right shoulder.

The accident happened at about 11:15 p.m., on the ramp from north Interstate 294 to Interstate 80 westbound, in Hazel Crest, Illinois.

According to police reports, a 2017 Ford SUV attempted to pass a semi truck on the right shoulder when it hit the concrete guardrail and struck the semi it was trying to pass. After hitting the first truck, the impact sent the SUV forward, causing it to rear-end a second semi truck.

49-year-old Reshma Khan, of Naperville, Illinois, was a passenger in the SUV. She was rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after the accident, and pronounced dead approximately one hour later.

The male driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries. His identity has not been released. No one else was injured in the crash.

The north Interstate 294 ramp to westbound Interstate 80 was closed after the accident, but reopened around 4 a.m. on Monday morning.
