I still love trucking because it’s steady work. I have been a company driver for 15 years, all OTR. This February I’m going to be a lease owner operator for CRST. My friend Patty joined their program 7 months ago and has been doing well on it. She has the load system down to a science. She only chooses loads that are going to pay her well.
And the big draw for me is that I can choose my own loads, go to California to visit family, and still make good money. Trucking has been a good opportunity for me. When I first started, I put all my stuff in storage and lived in the truck to save money.
I saved enough to put half down on a 5 acre bare property in North Central Florida. The property cost $22k back in 2001. It took 3 years to pay off the balance. Then I took a loan to put a modest 2 bedroom, 2 bath single wide mobile home, and the utilities. I call it “good cheap living”.
When I first started in trucking I was excited to see the country. There are so many beautiful places to see. After all these years, I still enjoy trucking. Job steadyness, good pay and more freedom. Free to roam the country. My truck is my office and home.
Making the move to owner operator is exciting for me. My friend Patty has a good mentor and she is mentoring me in the owner operator field. Owner operator is another exciting and challenging area in the trucking industry.
Thank you, and stay safe out there,
Trucker Sue and my dog Kelly
