Tom Ryan, a 40-year-old UPS driver, was making his routine deliveries on Staten Island Monday morning when he was struck by a black Toyota around 9:00 a.m..
According to witnesses, the driver of the Toyota swerved his car to avoid a pedestrian jaywalking on Hylan Boulevard which caused him to hit Tom Ryan.
The impact completely severed one of Ryan’s leg and left the other dangling by a thread.
“Tom was screaming. One of his legs was laying next to him under the truck. He was screaming . . . Then he got quiet when he was bleeding out,” Moe Sattar, a mechanic at Whil John’s Tire Empire, told the New York Post
Witnesses used a shirt to stop the bleeding of the severed limb before Ryan was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital. He was later taken to the trauma unit at Bellevue Hospital via helicopter.
A UPS representative states, “As of right now, Tom is going to make it. He’s going to live, but that’s all I know at this point.” According to the NYPD, no charges will be filed against the driver of the Toyota.
