TxDOT announced on Thursday that construction on two new safety rest areas will begin on August 8th.
In March of 2015, TxDot held a public meeting in Cumby, Texas to unveil its plans for the rest areas. The rest areas will be located along Interstate Highway 30 in Hopkins County, between FM 499 and FM 275 South.
According to TxDOT, the construction project will cost over $23 million to complete.
The estimated completion date is January 2018, and it will be handled by Haydon Building Corporation of Phoenix, Arizona.
The rest areas will surface around 49 acres and will be accessible by both westbound and eastbound traffic on I-30. The westbound location will be placed north of I-30 while the eastbound locatoin will be situated south of I-30.
All rest areas will be fully-equipped with restrooms, a lobby and exhibit area, a TxDot office, playgrounds and picnic areas, walking paths, passenger and tractor trailer parking, around the clock security, and a maintenance worker.
Landscaping and ponds will add to its attraction and irrigation needs.
While the construction is ongoing, officials remind drivers to use caution and to be attentive to signs, traffic controls, and barricades. Motorists are asked to reduce speed while nearby work zones and to practice careful driving.
