On Tuesday, the owner of a defunct trucking company was sentenced to nearly 3 years in prison for defrauding the IRS.

47-year-old Clifford C. Copp of Overland Park, Kansas, was the sole owner of Copp Trucking Co., which had 300 employees and $25 million in annual revenues in the years prior to its 2001 closure.

In 2001, Copp Trucking failed to pay $939,408 in employment taxes and abruptly shut its doors, citing increased expenses and reduced profitability. The company blamed several large crashes and increased fuel costs and the primary factor.

In 2004 the IRS attempted to collect the debt, but prosecutors claim Copp concealed his assets and funneled the remaining funds from Copp Trucking into farm equipment and livestock. According to legal documents, Copp also hid his involvement with his limo company company, Wildcat Limo, LLC.

This Tuesday, more than 15 years after Copp Trucking shut down, Copp pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of tax evasion. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison and was ordered to pay $939,408 in back taxes.
