On Tuesday night in Lacey, Washington, a 12 vehicle collision killed two people.
Police reported that the incident occurred around 6 p.m. just south of Marvin Road.
A northbound semi truck hauling produce was driving in the middle lane of I-5 when traffic began to slow and then came to a halt.
According to The Seattle Times, the truck driver failed to stop in time, striking the traffic ahead. The rig hit several vehicles, then jackknifed and rolled onto the passenger side. Its cab landed in the median, and the trailer ended up across several lanes of traffic.
The trailer came crashing on top of a sedan, crushing it and the people inside, and forcing it into the rear of another semi.
Two people from the sedan died upon impact.
Numerous vehicles were involved in this chain reaction.
Some of the vehicles involved were hit by the semi truck before it flipped, and others were hit by vehicles the semi truck hit.
Three others were taken to a hospital to treat injuries.
The incident closed all lanes of I-5 for several hours. Lanes have since reopened.
Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the crash and believe that wet roads were a factor.
