On Sunday, we reported about a semi truck that lost control and fell off of the I-20 bridge Kershaw County, South Carolina. Since then, new information has been revealed by local news agencies.
According to Tuscon News Now, 60-year-old Joe Stroman was driving a Postal Service truck when he lost control of the vehicle. Police officials stated that Stroman was attempting to pass another vehicle. Due to heavy rains, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fishtail into both railings, and topple over the left railing, landing it into the Wateree River below.
Fire crews stated that Stroman exited his truck and climbed on top and waited to be rescued. Camden-Kershaw County Rescue Squad put a boat in the water on U.S. 1 at the Wateree River and rode to the driver to attend to the driver.
Orange traffic cones marked the spot where the bridge was struck.
The guardrail was damaged but the South Carolina Department of Transportation says it has been replaced. Law officials notified the Department of Health and Environmental Control that diesel, caused by the accident, was in the water.
The driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from the accident. Stroman is expected to be cited for driving too fast for conditions, according to local police.
