A semi truck was involved in a serious crash on Interstate 90 near the Dane County-Rock County border in Wisconsin.
According to trooper Brandon Ferrell, the 35-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the highway median before striking a guardrail and jackknifing near mile marker 159. The guardrail prevented the truck from crossing into oncoming traffic.
Both the driver and his passenger survived without serious injuries.
“They’re just lucky they weren’t hurt in the crash,” Ferrell said. “Even more so, lucky that they didn’t hit someone when they lost control,” he added.
The wreck caused diesel fuel to flow into a nearby creek. Experts say the contamination may take months to fix.
“The ground is contaminated and then it freezes, it’s very difficult to remediate that soil and sometimes we have to wait for it to thaw out,” said Dane County Department of Natural Resources Conservation Warden John Sinclair.
Sinclar says the trucking company’s insurance is cooperating in the investigation, and it may cost thousands to repair the damage.
