A semi truck hauling pork products caught fire, causing traffic to shut down for hours. It happened on Interstate 68 in Cumberland, Maryland on Monday evening.
According to Salem News, the truck was carrying an assortment of pork products, including ribs and bacon. After the truck caught fire, it came to a halt past the exit near Willowbrook Road.
A 911 dispatcher said he stepped outside and “could smell burning bacon.”
Volunteers from 10 fire departments were called to the scene.
Westbound traffic on I-68 was temporarily closed while firefighters battled the blaze. Eastbound traffic was closed for six hours– from 6 p.m. until midnight.
Cumberland Fire Department Capt. Steve Grogg said that this wasn’t the first time they’ve seen an accident like this in the same vicinity.
He explained, “Just for our crew, this is the third tractor-trailer fire we’ve had in the city in the past two weeks. They all happen eastbound, coming down the mountain. The brakes get hot, catch on fire and it spreads into the trailer.”
Luckily, no one was injured in the fire. The incident remains under investigation.
