In Richmond, Virginia, a trucker rushed to assist the scene of a fellow trucker whose semi had spilled its load.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 1 p.m. on I-95 near Broad Street in downtown Richmond.
According to Virginia State Police, the semi truck lost control, struck the jersey wall, slammed into a bridge abutment.
It then spilled its load of cardboard across both sides of the interstate.
Witnesses reported that truck driver, Steve Burris, used his forklift to help clear debris off the road.
One witness said:
“Other people got out of their cars and helped clear the road too. Everyone pitching in to help clear the road gives you faith in humanity.”
Burris told media that all of the sudden, he crashed into one of the 1,000-pound bundles of cardboard that was strewn across the highway head-on. He furthered that his truck ended up on top of one of the bundles.
Burris continued that the collision caused damage to his truck’s axle, and he was stuck in place. It was then that his quick thinking sprung him into action.
“After I got out of the truck I called my boss and let him know what was going on. Then I got on the forklift and tried to clear the road out because I knew 95 was shut down.”
WTVR explained that without the quick action of this trucker, the road would have taken several hours to clear a path for cars.
While some are calling the trucker a hero, Burris says he was just helping out.
As a result of the incident, the trucker who lost control of his rig was taken to the hospital to treat serious injuries.
Burris’ rig was towed from the scene, and he told media that hoped to take the rest of the day off.
