A truck driver from Mississippi just won the democratic primary, receiving over 146,000 votes, even though he spent no money campaigning.
Robert Gray says he didn’t even show up to vote because he “had to do a lot of stuff and just lost track of time” according to an interview with the Associated Press.
Gray is 46-year-old retired firefighter, and now hauls freight across the country as the owner of a one-man trucking company.
He told Mississippi Public Broadcasting that he spent no money on campaigning, showed up to only a few events, and believes people just voted for him at random, “It was a couple of events, but even though my opponents did a lot of hard campaigning they only reached a few people. You know, it was just people showing up, voting and, I guess random, voting.”
Gray says, if elected, he plans on increasing public education spending and expanding Medicaid programs.
He won against party favorite Vicki Slater, a trial lawyer; and Dr. Valerie Adream Smartt Short, a gynecologist.
He will face current governor Phil Bryant in the general election in November, who has $2.8 million in campaign funding.
