A truck driver says he fell asleep driving and “woke up in a ditch” after his rig went off road and then overturned in Maine on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred on December 6th at approximately 4 a.m. in Athens, Maine.
Police say that a truck driver was traveling on Route 150 when his semi truck crossed the center line, went off road, and then crashed into a ditch.
“He claimed he fell asleep and woke up in the ditch,” said Athens Fire Chief Brett Strout to Central Maine News.
“The driver was complaining of bruising, but he was OK,” Strout continued.
The unidentified truck driver sustained only minor injuries in the crash and was not taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The tractor trailer, owned by Chaffee Transportation of Clinton, was on its way to the Maine Woods Pellet Co. with a load of sawdust at the time of the accident.
Crews worked for several hours to unload the sawdust before two tow trucks righted the overturned big rig. The accident has since been cleared and the semi truck towed from the scene.
