A Canadian truck driver was issued a massive $20,106 ticket for driving over a weight-restricted bridge earlier this week.
According to The Calgary Sun, the driver was headed to the United States from Alberta, Canada, when he drove over a weight-restricted bridge on Highway 22, over the Oldman River, on January 15th.
The truck, which was hauling double trailers loaded with grain, was approximately 82,000 pounds (37,220 kg) over the listed weight limit.
“The posted limit for the bridge was 10,000 kg but his truck weighed over 47,220 kg,” said Alberta Justice spokesman Bredan Cox.
“It will likely be one of the biggest tickets this year” he added.
Officials say the driver passed by several weight-restriction signs as he approached the bridge and had ample space to turn around.
The fine was so large because it’s increased for every 100kg the truck is over the posted weight limit.
Update:
The initial ticket was over $25,000, but was later reduced. A reader sent us a screenshot of the actual citation received, which can be seen below.
Yikes.
