A truck driver’s life was saved by members of an inspection crew after he was found non-responsive.
It happened on Monday around 9:30 a.m. at the weigh station on Interstate 68 in Finzel, Maryland. The 57-year-old truck driver had just passed a level 3 commercial vehicle inspection when he suffered a heart attack. He was later found lying on the ground of the parking lot.
Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspectors and a trooper responded to the scene where they found the man on the ground, without a pulse and unable to breathe.
WCBC reported that crews used a defibrillator and performed CPR on the trucker. When the fire department and ambulance arrived, the man was breathing on his own. He was then taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland for treatment.
A police spokesman stated:
“Although inspectors check a driver’s commercial driver’s license medical card, a medical checkup is out of their area of expertise.”
He explained:
“Fortunately for this driver, they had expertise in emergency medical care and were quick to respond. Regardless of their assignment, members of the Maryland State Police are proud of their ability to be ‘ever vigilant – always prepared.”
Troopers reported that before his medical emergency, the driver appeared physically healthy and he passed the inspection without violations.
