A truck driver was killed after his rig rolled off an embankment on Highway 99 and exploded upon hitting the roadway below.

The incident occurred on Northbound 99 in Fresno, California, around 6:30 a.m on Tuesday. After rolling off the highway, the rig landed on its side on Highland Avenue. It’s not yet known why the truck veered off the road.

“Highland is a pretty well traveled roadway. And really it was lucky that no one else was here, and not sure if there was anyone nearby that saw it, but obviously it could have been a lot worse,” Officer Axel Reyes of the California Highway Patrol said.

The truck was hauling orange juice, but the driver’s name or company has not yet been released.

The crash shut down Highland Avenue for several hours for cleanup crews to clear the scene.
