A truck driver was found on the ground of an Atlanta highway with a gunshot wound to the head, police say.

The driver was discovered by a passing motorist on a southbound Interstate 75 emergency lane. The motorist says the driver was on the ground, behind his truck’s trailer, and was bleeding and unresponsive.

He told police that he thought the driver was struck by another vehicle.

When emergency crews arrived, they rushed the driver to Grady Memorial Hospital. A CAT scan revealed that that driver had actually suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

According to WBRC, an investigation later revealed that “police found multiple shell casings behind the trailer.”

On Sunday evening it was reported that the driver was in critical, but stable condition. His identity has not been released.
