A truck driver died as a result of serious burns after his tractor trailer caught fire.

It happened on Monday around 6:30 p.m. on I-95 near mile marker 58 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a 2013 Freightliner tractor trailer was driving south on I-95 when the driver suddenly slowed down and veered off the road on the right shoulder. The semi truck traveled down an embankment where it jackknifed in the woods.

The tractor trailer ran into several trees before catching fire.

The truck driver has been identified as 61-year-old Gale Bernard Beasley. Beasley escaped the truck’s cab but suffered severe burns and was life-lighted to UNC Burn Center. According to ABC 11, the driver passed away on Tuesday.

The crash closed the northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 for 15 minutes while the driver was airlifted from the scene. The southbound lanes remained closed for an additional hour.
