Update: The driver has told investigators he was shot by a “lot lizard” he picked up.

A truck driver is in critical condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds and collapsing inside a Pilot truck stop off Interstate 465 in Indianapolis.

According to CBS-4, the driver pulled up to a fuel pump around 3:30 a.m. and honked his horn in order to call for help. After his warning honks went unnoticed, he managed to stumble inside the truck stop and get the attention of an employee, who called for help.

Police believe the driver, who works for Illinois-based Enol Transportation, was shot during a robbery attempt.

Investigators say there are no witnesses, and are unsure where the shooting occurred.

The only lead investigators have is from a nearby hotel worker who claims to have seen his truck leaving the hotel’s parking lot. The hotel has shared their surveillance footage with local police and are cooperating with the investigation.

The driver’s name has not been released. He is currently in Eskenazi Hospital and listed in critical condition.
