Several weeks ago, an incident between a school bus and semi truck made headlines after the video went viral online.
The clip showed a school bus attempting to pass a FedEx truck on a single-lane road in Lakewood, New Jersey. As the bus tries to pass the truck, the FedEx driver moves in front of the bus, forcing it further into oncoming traffic.
It happened on September 14 and less than 24 hours later the bus driver was fired. Once FedEx got a hold of the footage, the FedEx driver, Sigmund Winiavski, was also fired.
On October 2nd, after several weeks of investigation, the former FedEx driver was charged with aggravated assault. Investigators acknowledged that the bus made an illegal move, but declined to charge the driver criminally.
Detective Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith of the Lakewood Police Department told reporters that under normal circumstances, the truck driver would have been charged with simple assault because there was no contact or injuries, however because there was a school bus involved, the charges were elevated to aggravated assault.
