A truck driver is being called a hero after crashing into a highway median on Interstate 37 yesterday, preventing injuries and potentially saving lives.
Truck driver Ismael Hernandez was on his way to San Antonio, Texas, from San Juan, Texas, when he approached a 30 vehicle pileup in thick fog on Interstate 37. He was unable to slow down in time, due to the low visibility, and decided to veer into the highway’s median instead of crashing into the pileup.
“The driver of the big rig, he chose instead of ramming into several cars, he took the median and probably did save a number of lives,” said San Antonio Police Department Captain Chris Benavides.
Motorist Lynn Kelm, who was involved in the pileup, called Hernandez a hero for his actions. “He would have pushed us from way back there up under this bridge and there would have been some fatalities. So he is a hero today. He’s a long-haul truck driver and he’s a hero,” she said.
