According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the snow storm that shut down majority of Interstate 80 this week caused nearly 90 crashes in two days.

The storm blanketed Wyoming in snow on Tuesday evening. By Wednesday morning, the snowfall was over, but strong winds blew the fresh snow into the air, significantly reducing visibility for travelers. One driver said it was like driving with a “white sheet of paper covering your windshield”.

Dangerous road condition led to the closure of many highways, including a nearly 350-mile stretch of Interstate 80.

Today, Wyoming Highway Patrol announced that the storm caused almost 90 accidents between Tuesday to Thursday. They also said that forty percent of the accidents resulted in injury, including an accident that killed two people when their pickup truck swerved off Highway 20/28 in Casper.

Although most of the roadways have reopened, troopers are urging travelers to maintain caution.

The National Weather Service says a similar storm is expected to hit the state on Sunday.
