Later this week, drivers will have an easier time finding parking on Interstate 95 between Richmond and Baltimore.
The Truck ‘N Park program, which was funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and operated by technology company Schneider Electric, will allow drivers to check for parking spots in two rest areas — using just voice commands on their mobile phone.
The program updates parking availability in real-time, using both in-pavement sensors as well as a camera system.
The program will go live on November 20, 2015 and will include two rest areas located on the northbound lanes of Interstate 95:
I-95 North Ladysmith Safety Rest Area in Ladsysmith, Virginia (located at mile marker 107, approximately 30 miles north of Richmond)
I-95 North Welcome Center in Laurel, Maryland (located at mile marker 37, approximately 20 miles south of Baltimore.)
In order to access the system from the road, call 855-TRK-PARK (855-875-7275). You can then navigate the menu using just voice commands.
The initial launch of the Truck ‘N Park program will include the two listed rest areas and is expected to last for four months. If successful, the program will likely expand to other areas.
