Texas might eliminate mandatory safety inspections for most vehicles. However, big rigs would still need to be inspected.
The Texas Senate approved a bill in Austin on Thursday that would do away with required safety inspections for most vehicles.
According to the AP, commercial vehicles would still deal with such inspections. Also, emissions inspections would remain mandatory in the most heavily populated counties in the state.
Sen. Don Huffines, the bill’s sponsor, mentioned that the federal government and other large states no longer require such inspections. Also, he believes there is no apparent safety advantage to such inspections for drivers in the state.
“These inspections have no discernible safety benefit to Texas drivers,” Huffines said, according to Dallas News.
However, Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. expressed concern about passing the bill.
“If this bill is passed, I’m going to have trouble sleeping … knowing my grandchildren will be on Texas roads with hundreds, if not thousands, of unsafe cars,” he said.
The bill passed 24-7 and will next be considered by the House.
