An accident shut down a stretch of Interstate 90 in Geneva, New York, on Monday morning, forcing trucks and other vehicles to turn around and leave the highway.
The crash was reported shortly before 7 a.m., and involved a single vehicle — a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder.
Police say the Pathfinder hit a guardrail, then over-corrected and rolled over on the highway. Two young brothers, ages 9 and 11, were ejected from the car and died at the scene. The 31-year-old driver was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
“All westbound traffic on I-90 must exit the Thruway at exit 42 (Geneva – Lyons – NY Route 14) due to a vehicle accident. Avoid travel in the area if possible,” the New York State Thruway Authority reported.
Vehicles that were stuck on the road are being ordered to turn around and leave the highway. The westbound lanes are expected to remain closed until 1 p.m. due to the investigation.
