Police in Nebraska will partner with truck drivers as part of a new public-private safety initiative.
The program, called “Trooper in a Truck,” is a partnership between the Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska Trucking Association. According to the Nebraska Trucking Association, the statewide project will place troopers inside the cabs of semi trucks, in order to get a better view of the road and catch dangerous drivers.
Officers will be looking for motorists who display dangerous driving habits such as texting, following too closely, speeding, and aggressive driving. After spotting a dangerous driver, the officer in the truck will radio an officer in a marked patrol car, who will then stop the violator and issue a citation or warning.
“Having eyes in commercial motor vehicles allows us to see things we wouldn’t normally see from a marked patrol unit. It’s also an invaluable tool to work with truckers to help tackle the issue of public safety on our roadways. We’re very grateful for the relationship we have with the trucking industry, and value their help,” said Nebraska State Patrol Lieutenant Kurt Von Minden.
