Truck drivers thinking about taking local roads in order to bypass the scales on Interstate 5 in Marion County, Oregon, may want to think twice before doing so.
Marion County Sheriff Jason Myers says since November, his officers have pulled over 187 commercial vehicles and heavy trucks on Boone Ferry Road. Of the 187 stops, 120 drivers were given citations while the remaining 67 were left with a warning.
The campaign began a year ago after Woodburn city council grew worried over the amount of trucks using Boone Ferry as a means to avoid the weigh station at the Woodburn Port of Entry.
Meyers said a notable difference can be seen once patrols became heavier and more consistent. “I know word is getting out through the truck driver community that enforcement is happening,” he said. “So, hopefully, you’ll be seeing less truckers out there.”
His office has put up billboards to remind truckers to stay on the freeway. According to the Woodburn Independent, he’s working with Marion County Public Works “to post signage on Boones Ferry prohibiting truck through-traffic, which he said would make it easier for the citations to stick.”
