Severe dust storm caused multiple traffic collision on Interstate 10 in New Mexico on Thursday, leading to a 70-mile closure of the highway.

Mike Gunney Faram, of Truckers Had Enough E-Magazine, witnessed the crash and reported from the scene. “At approximately 12:12 this afternoon during a severe dust storm a car carrying a family was travelling WB and suddenly stopped without warning, causing a semi to run over it,” he told LiveTrucking.com

An elderly woman in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

“A half mile behind this accident another semi rear ended a UPS truck pulling Doubles, [pushing it] into the back of a passenger vehicle,” Faram added.

A 70-mile stretch of Interstate 10 has been closed in both directions as a response to the adverse conditions. The closure spans from U.S. Highway 191 in southeastern Arizona to Lordsburg, New Mexico.
