One person was killed and several others injured in a major pileup involving nine semi trucks and five passenger vehicles on Friday evening.

The incident took place near mile marker 127 on Interstate 70 in New Castle, Indiana.

According to ABC-6, five people were airlifted to the hospital. One man, 42-year-old Joseph Buie, died in the crash.

Initial reports indicated that five semi trucks were involved in the crash, however the Indiana State Police later reported that nine semis were involved.

WHTR reporter Dave Calabro called it the “worst crash in 30 years”.

The Indiana State Police also reported that a truck hauling coal burst into flames after crashing into the back of the pileup. The accident caused the westbound lanes to be closed, and IDOT warned motorists to stay clear of the area.

An investigation is currently underway by the Indiana State Police. The ISP says it may take several days before they’re able to determine the cause of the crash.

Update: The westbound lanes were reopened around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
