Two big rigs collided on westbound I-80 in Vacaville, California, causing a scene of metal wreckage.
It happened on Wednesday at Lagoon Valley Road. The California Highway Patrol stated that one of the big rigs was parked along the side of the freeway. Then at around 4:10 a.m., another semi truck hauling scrap metal side-swiped it. Fox 40 reported that the force of the impact caused both of the trucks to overturn.
Metal debris and diesel fuel spilled all over the interstate.
According to CalTrans, the cleanup was expected to take several hours due to the mass amount of debris.
Officials worked to clear the area.
Sgt. Steven Lott of the California Highway Patrol commented on the situation regarding the truck driver.
“No, they were not sleeping on the side of the road. They stopped momentarily, for what reasons, they are still under investigation.”
The accident caused major traffic delays for people commuting into the Bay Area. The backup stretched to the Midway Road entrance, near Dixon. Two lanes were closed until the scene was cleared of the wreckage.
The trucks suffered severe damage as a result of the accident. Both drivers of the big rigs and an additional driver who was sleeping in one of the rigs suffered minor injuries.
The lanes reopened around 2 p.m., but officials warned drivers of potential delays in the area.
The crash remains under investigation.
