A fiery crash involving an overturned semi truck shut down a roadway on Thursday in Hunterdon County.

The crash happened near the Exit 23 in Tewksbury, New Jersey. According to NJ1015, a semi truck hit the Route 523 overpass, then caught fire upon impact.

The semi truck was a charred mess.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Lt. Brian Polite stated that the only vehicle involved was the semi truck. The truck driver, whose identity has not been released, died as a result of the accident.

A Hazmat team responded to the scene after fluid was found leaking into a nearby stream.

Emergency crews worked to put out the fire.

By 7:15 a.m., Route 78 was shut down in both directions. The eastbound side of the expressway at Route 22 was also closed. Traffic was detoured and delayed for 8 hours.

By 9:30 a.m., westbound lanes were reopened. All lanes on Route 22 eastbound West of Route 523 in Readington Township have since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
