A semi truck hauling 40,000 pounds of unmarked pennies lost its load when it flipped on a Delaware interstate. It happened around 2 a.m. on Thursday on Interstate 95 in New Castle County.

According to Fox 29, a northbound semi truck was on its way to the Mint in Philadelphia to deliver the pennies when it struck a barrier in a construction zone, causing it to overturn.

Blank pennies scattered the roadway.

The road and trailer were damaged from a small truck fire sparked by a fuel spill. Officials said that the construction zone and wet roads from rain were likely factors in the crash.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Traffic was backed up for miles to Route 273, and all but one lane of northbound I-95 were closed.

The crash occurred just before the I-295 and the Delaware Memorial Bridge, so traffic leading to New Jersey and New York was also affected. Motorists were advised to take alternate routes to avoid the area.

The roadway has since reopened.
