
A big rig hauling two trailers of sawdust crashed into a pub in Hopland, California, after the driver choked on his coffee.
The accident happened early Friday morning, on Highway 101, at around 3:50 a.m.
According to The Press Democrat, the driver, identified as 48-year-old C. Hammack, told repsonders that he “he was drinking coffee when he began choking and coughing just before losing control of the rig.”
After losing control of the truck, it swerved across the highway median and into the Hopland Tap House building.
An owner of a restaurant across the street witnessed the accident and helped pull the driver out of his truck. The driver suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
The Hopland Tap House building was erected in 1891 and was considered a local landmark. A engineer was called to assess the structural integrity of the building. The owner of the Tap House said it will be “closed for a while.”
