A man in Seattle noticed a police speed trap so he decided to create a sign to warn drivers to slow down. In his effort to prevent motorists from receiving a ticket, however, he received one of his own.

He posted his encounter with Seattle Police Department officer on Facebook.

The sign that Gehlke was holding read “Cops Ahead! Stop at sign and light!”. A few minutes later he was approached by an SPD officer who told him the sign was illegal, and issued him a $138 ticket.

In the video, the officer can be heard telling Gielhke that it’s illegal to hold a sign giving traffic instructions. Words like “danger,” “stop,” and “slow” are all prohibited according to the officer.

Gehlke told KOMO-TV, “I do think this is police overstepping their bounds and using, twisting laws.” He says he plans to appeal the ticket.
