On Monday, a police officer from San Antonio was arrested.
The 42-year-old officer, Daniel Schmitt is currently facing eight counts of felony bribery.
He was previously part of a unit specializing in commercial vehicle enforcement. However, Schmitt reportedly was no longer working for the commercial vehicle enforcement unit when he was accused of continuing to perform truck inspections underhandedly.
Police reported that the officer was first placed on administrative duty before he was indefinitely suspended a few weeks ago.
According to KVUE, officials accused Schmitt of taking bribes since 2013.
TXDOT stated that Schmitt was being paid to give passing inspections to one local trucking company in particular.
Court documents showed that the officer reportedly had taken nearly $8,000 in bribes from the trucking company, Texas Chrome Transport Incorporated.
San Antonio Police Department reported that the criminal case was investigated by IT’s intelligence unit.
Another police officer, Johnny Diaz, apparently turned himself in last week in connection with the crime. According to investigations, Schmitt had paid Diaz $400 to give a passing inspection for Texas Chrome Transport.
Schmitt’s bond was set at $20,000.
