Earlier this week, dozens of truck drivers were trapped in a Walmart parking lot during a blizzard in Nebraska. After hearing hearing about the stranded drivers, one local business owner sprang into action, personally driving them back to his restaurant for a hot meal and some shelter — for free.
According to the The McCook Gazette, approximately 40 semi trucks packed into the Walmart Supercenter off Highway 34 in McCook, Nebraska, during a storm which blanketed the area in two feet of snow on Tuesday.
Although the Walmart store was open, the deli department was closed, leaving some drivers without food for the remainder of the storm.
After being tipped off about the stranded drivers, local businessman Val Fuller, owner of Fuller’s Restaurant, decided he had to do something about it.
He hopped into his Hummer and picked up 8 drivers in the Walmart parking lot who were without food, and brought them back to his restaurant for a hot meal.
One stranded driver, Penny Townsend of Holbrook, described the scene:
My husband and I and about 40 other semi drivers got stranded at the Walmart parking lot when the blizzard started yesterday evening. Today Walmart was open but cause of under staffing the deli wasn’t.
While we always have food on truck and a way to cook not all drivers do.
The fellow driver from our company who also is here with us decided to call Fullers Family Restaurant and they told us they would come get all the drivers who wanted to go down and eat. The owner came and ferried eight of us down to the restaurant to eat this afternoon.
After enjoying their meals, the drivers were shuttled back to their rigs in the Walmart parking lot.
If you’re ever in the area and looking for a place to eat that respects the hard working men and women in America — Fuller’s is the place to go.
Fuller’s Family Restaurant is located at 110 Norris Ave in McCook.
