Like doctors, actors, and many other professionals, truckers are viewed in a particular way. Not always, but often, the image of a trucker is not a positive one. But why?
The Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) has some answers to that question, and is taking the initiative to help build a new image for both truck drivers and the trucking industry as a whole.
Todd Spencer of OOIDA says:
“while dealing with the issue of driver image, the industry as a whole needs to ‘deal honestly‘ with issues that impact drivers’ negatively, like pay and treatment by shippers and receivers.”
Spencer introduced the campaign called Trucking Moves America Forward on March 26th, at the Mid-America Trucking Show. He said, “A lot of what makes drivers feel good about themselves is how they’re treated in the industry they work in.”
The goal of Trucking Moves America Forward is to paint the image of drivers as working professionals who play a vital role in the U.S. economy. They’re also hoping to attract new drivers and change any negative views the public may harbor toward truckers.
“Those behind the wheel [are] clearly the most important people in trucking. Without them we are absolutely nothing and without them this industry doesn’t exist,” he said. “If you want somebody to feel good about themselves and want them to make [driving] their future, give them a reason. Make them know they’re appreciated.”
Truckers, we agree with Todd and think that truckers are often misrepresented and mistreated. So, what steps would you take to project a positive light on the industry as a whole?
