The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s “Brake Safety Week” is fast approaching, and thousands of commercial vehicles will be stopped to get their brakes inspected (among other common issues).
It will last from September 7 – 13, 2014, throughout the entire U.S. and Canada.
Vehicles with brakes that are deemed defective or out-of-adjustment will be placed out of service.
Below are the results of last year’s brake week (2013) where 20,067 vehicles were inspected:
Total Number Placed Out of Service | % Placed OOS | Reason |
---|---|---|
1811 | 9% | Brake Adjustment |
1434 | 7.1% | Brake Components |
2714 | 13.5% | Overall Brake Issues |
In addition to brake issues, inspectors will also be looking out for the following:
• Driver License
• Registration
• Low Air Warning Device
• Pushrod Travel (Adjustment)
• Brake Linings/Drums
• Air Loss Rate (If leak detected)
• Tractor Protection System
All inspections will be a Level IV inspection. For more information, check out the CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Inspection Procedure.
