Over the past week, police have been camping out, waiting to catch truckers in violation of a new rule.
It’s happening in Lehman Township, Pennsylvania. A construction project to replace a bridge has created the need for detours as part of Route 118 has been closed.
WNEP reported that one of the detours is specifically for trucks that weigh over 24 tons. However, while other vehicles’ detours only last around 9 miles, the detour for trucks expands to almost 24 miles.
James May from PennDot explained the reasons behind the lengthy detour.
“What we will do is post them on the shortest route that is a state road. There are much shorter routes here as far as the detour, but from the state, we only post on state roads.”
Safety is another concern, according to Lehman Township Police. The roads not only have a 10-ton weight limit, but they are also narrow with many curves along the path.
The bridge is expected to be completed by Sunday.
