In Wayne County, Indiana, a crash involving two semis and two cars resulted in the death of a 22-year-old woman from Boston, Massachusetts.
The collision occurred around 3:50 p.m. on Sunday in a construction zone near the 145-mile marker of I-70, west of Centerville Road near Richmond, Indiana.
The truck driver, 21-year-old Harvinder Singh Bhagtana of Fresno, California, was driving a red 2015 Volvo semi pulling a box trailer. Troopers stated that traffic at that time was backed up and was stopped for five or six miles due to a lane closure ahead.
A preliminary investigation noted that the semi was driving too fast for road and traffic conditions. Because of his excess speed, Bhagtana was unable to stop before striking the rear corner of a 2016 Acura driven by 21-year-old Nicholas Berry of Naperville, Illinois.
Upon impact, the semi veered into the left lane and hit the rear of a 2009 Audi, driven by 22-year-old Margaret Ryan from Boston.
That impact forced Ryan’s SUV under the semi in front.
Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene.
WHIO reported that Berry, Bhagtana, and the driver of the second semi involved, 51-year-old William Weatherford III of Palm Cost, Florida, were all not injured.
The passenger in Ryan’s vehicle, 25-year-old Christine Yip, was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Eastbound I-10 was closed for over 5 hours as crews cleared and investigated the scene.
Traffic was diverted onto Indiana 1. Westbound I-70 was also closed for a brief time and has since reopened.
Bhagtana was cited for driving too fast to avoid the collision. He is expected to receive additional charges.
