Deputies in Van Buren County, Michigan, say a cable barrier stopped a tractor trailer from crossing into oncoming traffic and prevented a serious crash after the driver fell asleep while driving on Monday afternoon.
According to local police, the driver of the 2015 Kenworth truck fell asleep while traveling on Interstate 94 westbound, just west of Paw Paw, Michigan, around 12:50 p.m. The truck destroyed 45 cable barrier posts before coming to a rest, Michigan Live reported.
“It was clear that the cable barrier prevented the semi-truck and trailer from entering into the eastbound lanes, which could have been catastrophic,” Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel E. Abbott stated in a press release.
“The investigation showed that the semi was traveling westbound on I-94, when the driver fell asleep at the wheel, ran off the roadway left, went through the median, and struck the cable barrier located on the eastbound lane.”
“The 37 year-old driver (from Canton, Ohio) was uninjured in the crash and he was cited for careless driving,” Abbott added.
