Make sure your seat belt is fastened tight and mind the road signs, Operation Safe Driver Week is planned to begin on Oct 19th-24th throughout the entire U.S. and Canada.
Operation Safe Driver Week was a campaign launched in 2007 by FMCSA, the CVSA, and state and local enforcement. It’s aim is to eradicate deaths caused by the unsafe driving of commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles and buses. Each year, nearly 40,000 people die from vehicle related accidents.
Truckers can expect an increase in law enforcement activity as well as an increase in roadside inspections.
During last year’s Safe Driving Week, three times the amount of commercial and passenger vehicles were pulled over for reckless behavior than in 2012..
The CVSA has noted that in prior years, passenger vehicles were caught speeding much more than commercial vehicles, 53% vs 7%.
Based on their finding, CVSA officers have stated that:
“car drivers continue to speed significantly more so than commercial vehicles”.
Enforcement officials are not only paying more attention to behaviors on the road, but are also educating those they pull over on proper safety etiquette.
Some believe it’s just another revenue generating blitz, as opposed to a proper safety campaign, but either way make sure you’re ready come the 19th.
